January 2011

January kicks in a new year as always. This time of year is usually one where I find myself reflecting over the last year and where I would like to see myself in the coming months. Well I have to say that 2010 was overall not so bad; not exactly what I wanted out of the year but overall good. And I do feel that 2011 is going to be good.

Though I do have a tad bit of bad news to report. One of the cornerstones of main street Nexus will be closing. I've loved what they have been doing for the last few years. There is something to be said of supporting fair trade and local artists. But things change and the guys are moving on to other projects. But this means that they are having a grand sale! So take some time to stop by for the rest of the month and check out the discounts. Nexus is located 16442 Main Street.

Now something good, the fourteenth annual Wednesday Hump Night Potlucks are back at the Rainbow Cattle Company. Every Wednesday night from 7 to 9 pm it's a potluck and a lot of fun. Now if you recall it's also a contest for best entree and dessert/salad. So break out your cookbooks and lets eat! Themes for the month are the 12th is South o the Border, 19th Italian, 26th Asian, February 2nd is Soup and Stews and the 9th is White Trash Fare. The event runs through March and I'll make sure to keep everyone up on what's going on.

And other news on the club scene around town, rumor has it that Club Yamagata is gearing up. Yay! As you know they moved to the other side of town (17121 Highway116) awhile back and so I'm looking forward to them opening. The space is wonderful and they have some great new energy for the new year. Looking towards a spring opening or sooner. Keep an eye out for all the 411 in this space as they get closer to the grand relaunch of the venue.

Speaking of new venues and moving. Did you know our local credit union is going to be moving also? Community First is taking over what used to be Russian River Video on the corner of  Armstrong and  Highway 116. So with a “Smart Branch” you can handle all of your banking needs between the in house computers and or Ipads. With a ATM to handle all cash needs. I am so looking forward to opening an account with them. And in case your not so familiar with technology, there will be a real person on site to help you out with your banking in the location. Though you can also do it all from the comforts of home on your own computer if you would like. They should be opening sometime in January, so keep an eye out for the opening and stop in and say “Hey” to Beth and the gang once they move.

Another event at the Rainbow Cattle Company I want to make sure you know about is a Give Back Tuesday. The bar does ten percent of the sales each and every Tuesday for a wonderful charity in the area. On the 25th it's all about our water resources. My dear friend Vera the California Mermaid and I are hosting the night for the Community Clean Water Institute. They do all kinds of things around our rivers, lakes and water resources. Check them out online at www.ccwi.org and the Mermaids web page at www.thecaliforniamermaid.com

And one last event I want to touch on. For the month of February my friend Sean at Coffee Bazaar will be showing a selection of his photography. I've seen a bit of a preview of the show and I want everyone to know that his work is wonderful and quite amazing. He really has a great eye. On the 3rd from 6-8 pm you can stop in at Coffee Bazaar and hang out with Sean. And of course for the month, feel free to stop in and have some light fare and coffee while looking at his work. And hey, it's always nice to purchase locally done art.

So lets keep the faith for the River area! I'm very excited as we look into the Spring that things will spring back around town. Take some time to shop locally, stop into the Bullpen on Thursday nights and sing a few songs with Country Dan at Karaoke, get all your hair and skin needs at Creation Salon, and look towards the best time of the year, Spring!

You may want to tune into my radio show on KGGV 95.1 LP FM. The Bridge every Sunday but the fourth week of the month at 9 pm “The River Dish” for all things Dishy and Swishy on the River. And hey feel free to drop me some fan mail at mzalicedee@gmail.com
